INDIAN FASHION WEEK ENDS
Day six of Lakme India Fashion Week opened with a debutante designer in the fashion week, Sabyasachi.
The 26 year old designer’s clothes took everyone by surprise for his collection was stunning in it’s use of exquisite colour mixes and unusual silhouettes. Bohemian chic was reinterpreted for Indian silhouettes with patch skirts, tunics, blouses, jackets and sarees.
Global Indian-ness underlined the theme of his collection. The audience were delighted when the male models walked down the ramp with painted bodies in designer Neeta Bhargav’s show. Her clothes had an eclectic mix of thread embroideries, expressive colours and wearable silhouettes. All in all her collection had a balance of practical approach and saleability.
Another attraction of the day was the designer duo Meera and Muzaffar Ali’s show.
The high point of this show was it’s music which had been composed by the designer himself. The music served to enhance the feminine and sensuous feel of the clothes. The regal brocades on the dresses added a feeling of nostalgia. Veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore attended the show.
Meanwhile at the Lakme Salon, Swarosky crystal tattoos were quite a rage, not only with the visitors but also the models. With Lakme India Fashion week being a trade event, every participating designer has his or her own stall where they interact with prospective buyers. Besides domestic buyers, at least fifteen international buyers like Selfridges, RCKC were present for this Indian Fashion Event and designers usually had their hands full.
The fashion week ended with the much awaited Lakme Grand Finale. The show saw three top designers – Rajesh Pratap, Monisha Jaising and Suneet Verma – giving expression to Lakme’s statement for 2002-2003.
The theme for Rajesh Pratap’s collection was ‘pure brilliance’. His show consisted of eye-catching garments all in white and reflective shades of effervescent lilacs created from mirror-like flash pearls for a frost effect.
The theme for Monisha Jaising’s collection was ‘electric brilliance’. The clothes were vibrant, done up in dual shades of fuschia and orange to reflect different tones like a prism.
As the week came to an end the models looked a little tired, but happy nonetheless. Most top models have done eighteen shows each during the week.
The last show of the fashion week was of designer Suneet Verma. The theme he embodied was ‘sensual brilliance.’ All garments reflected intense shades, created from russet, gold and ruby coloured pearls to provide instant, lush colour.
The Grand Finale ended with a much appreciated Lazer show.
