Collection of Pashmina aka Cashmere Fibre from Changpa Goats in Ladakh India
The Changpa or Champa are a semi-nomadic Buddhist people found mainly in the Changtang in Ladakh, India. A smaller number resides in the western regions of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
The cashmere fibre used in Pashma articles comes from Cashmere (Pashmina) animal-hair fibre forming the downy undercoat of the Cashmere/Kashmir/Pashmina goats (Capra hircus laniger) herded by the people of the Changpa tribe.
These goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine and soft undercoat/underdown hair inter-mingled with a much coarser outer coating of guard hair.
This soft undercoat/underdown hair/fibre is collected during the June – July moulting season which is the start of early summers in Ladakh when the Cashmere goats naturally shed their winter coat.
The Cashmere fibre is collected by hand with a traditional comb that gently removes loose tufts of fiber from the Cashmere goat as the comb is raked through its fleece.
The process is very gentle and does not any discomfort to the cashmere goats.
