At Rise Above, we empower Native youth to lead healthy lives despite the challenges. We deliver education, prevention skills, and mentorship through programs tailored to their needs.
Working closely with tribes and partners, we build tailored education programs with basketball clinics at the center. The clinics — free for youth — are the draw and the platform, an invitation for Native youth to hone their skills on and off the court. And research shows us that kids learn better when they engage their bodies along with their brains.
If you’re registering for one of our upcoming clinics, welcome! We can’t wait to meet you!

BE MY FRIEND:
In 2016, Miles began working on a 20-man crew within her tribe’s fire department. With the job’s focus was on teamwork, strength, and helping others, Miles immediately felt she’d found her place. “You’re out working with 20 people, usually on mop-up duty getting dirty and digging lines,” she says. “My goal is just to keep learning and moving up.” Accomplishing that means rigorous training and maintaining your wits in high-pressure situations. “Every summer I’m taking a physical exam to make sure my health is in order [and] the PAC test is wearing this 45lb vest while running three miles in under 45 minutes, so it’s intense,” says Miles. “I prefer engine crew, though as I don’t want to go overboard and break my body, but even driving can be incredibly dangerous. We’re out in the mountains where there are woodland fires and limited road access so you have to worry about dead trees or traffic on these single lane roads.”
The Victoria’s Secret opportunity came while Miles was living in Idaho and arrived as a welcome surprise. “I’m honestly still shocked that this happened,” she says. “I had a casting agency email me and say I should apply for this, and I didn’t think anything of it. A month passed, and I didn’t hear back, so I just assumed I didn’t get the job, no big deal. Then the night before, I get a phone call telling me to pack my bags!” Once she made the trip to Los Angeles for the shoot, Miles was thrilled to see the warm environment on set. “It was refreshing, there was such excitement backstage,” she says. “Everyone was so welcoming. The creative director and crew were embracing each other and so happy that this campaign was coming to light because it wasn’t just another photoshoot for them.”
